UPMC is the largest French scientific university with more than 32000 students, 180 research laboratories and 10000 employees, of which 4500 are researchers. UPMC is involved in numerous international partnership
agreements and has France’s largest scientific library and infrastructures. UPMC’s European Affairs office, which is in charge of the EU projects, has managed so far more than 100 FP7 projects.
UPMC’s computer science department (Laboratoire d’Informatique de Paris 6 – LIP6) gathers 191 researchers from UPMC, the French national research centre (CNRS) and the national institute for research in informatics and
automation (INRIA), and has 217 PhD students. It is therefore one of the major research laboratories in France. Its research activities cover a broad spectrum ranging from scientifc computing, to intelligent systems, decision
theory, operations research, databases, machine learning, networks, distributed systems, systems on chips. LIP6 is a partner in two of the recently-launched national centres for competitivity. The laboratory also shares two research groups with INRIA. International cooperation is at the core of the laboratory’s activities. LIP6 participates in several EU Networks of Excellence and has also developed close research relationships with groups in many different non-EU countries (Brazil, US, etc.).
Within LIP6, the DESIR department (Decision, Intelligent Systems and Operations Research) is specialized in models and algorithms for automatic decision systems, in particular in probabilistic factored representations (Probabilistic Graphical Models, Bayesian networks) and sophisticated representations of preferences (GAI networks, etc.) as well as different frameworks for decisions (multicriteria decision, collective decision, context, etc.).
